Sony users waited ten years for this

Hello Reader,

I have owned the Sony 300mm f/2.8 GM lens for around 12 months. It sits on my shelf amongst my other Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Fujifilm lenses, giving me a great perspective on its performance.

This is a lens designed for sports and wildlife photographers. And yet, nobody would say 300mm is enough focal length for serious shooting of either genre.

Why the dichotomy?

Focal length flexibility is the key.

With teleconverters, you have:

  • 300mm f/2.8
  • 420mm f/4
  • 600mm f/5.6

Ok, now we're talking! On its own, 300mm isn't enough for all situations. But that trifecta is a powerful combination.

But, it relies on the with-teleconverter performance. So, just how good is it?

In my article, I'll show you some sample images, discuss how the lens compares to other Sony lenses, such as my 600mm f/4 GM, and explain why a Sony shooter may want to consider this lens.

I hope you find it useful,

A black-chinned hummingbird from last year's workshop. Hello Reader, Last year, I led a fantastic photo workshop alongside Aaron Baggenstos to photograph the beautiful hummingbirds of British Columbia. We stayed in a beautiful mountain lodge, ate great food, made new friends, and shot thousands and thousands of photos. It was such a blast that we're doing it again in June, and we still have a couple of spaces available. A stunning male calliope hummingbird from last year's workshop. A female...

Hello Reader, Peak Design has been one of my go-to brands for camera-carrying solutions in the past decade or so. I have reviewed every bag they've ever made. Backpacks, camera straps, and sling bags have always been their thing, but many people wondered if they'd ever create a carry-on roller. Today is that day. The new Roller Pro uses an ultra-slim carbon telescoping handle to minimize intrusion into the bag's main compartment, and a new made-to-fit XL Camera Cube allows photographers to...

Hello Reader, Last month, the explanation of my current photo backup routine struck a chord with many people. I received a lot of great feedback and quite a few follow-up questions. I love the questions because they help me to shape future content, and that's just what I'm doing today. Regarding travel backups, one commenter asked how I manage my Lightroom catalog while traveling. Truth be told, I have had this same question MANY times before. It has always been clear that this is a sticking...
